ABSTRACT

In the wake of the current COVID-19 pandemic, most face-to-face activities have been restricted including the scientific program such as capacity building. This, in turn, requires rapid redesign of capacity building implementation during the pandemic period. Hence, this study aims at organizing a virtual capacity building for early-career scientists as an alternative to traditional setting which requires face-to-face interaction. This virtual capacity building focuses on the use of remote sensing for effective monitoring of ocean climate resilience. This program was developed using Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) under UTM Open Learning platform which is known as MOOC on Ocean Remote Sensing towards Climate Resilience. A total of 26 international participants successfully participated in this MOOC UTM-PORSEC. This virtual program contains 14 modules that were conducted by experienced instructors in the field of ocean remote sensing. The program evaluation has shown that the overall Programme Learning Outcomes have scored above 70%. Furthermore, 88% of the MOOC-PORSEC participants have completed all the course content, assignments and quizzes. The developed virtual capacity building has provided a new digital learning experience as well as it saves the cost of travelling and time at the expense of physical interaction.

ABSTRACT

All children, particularly those with special needs, have been adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. This qualitative study explored the experiences of children with learning disabilities (LD) during the COVID-19 Pandemic. A criterion sample of twenty-three children ages 7 to 10 (M = 8.56, SD = 1.12) from Turkey was interviewed. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the collected data. Three themes were generated: 1) Perceived changes in Children's Daily Lives, 2) Educational Process, and 3) Support During the Pandemic. Overall, findings from the present study provided insights into children's experiences with LD during the COVID-19 pandemic.Copyright © 2023 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

ABSTRACT

Aim: The aim of the study was to evaluate nurses' knowledge of protective precautions and their experiences of various factors during the Covid-19 pandemic. Design: A descriptive cross-sectional study. Methods: In this descriptive cross-sectional study, the snowball method was selected for sampling to access nurses (n = 392) serving in the fight against the Covid-19 infection nationwide. The online data collection form had two parts: a sociodemographic form and a second part including 25 items on institutional protective measures, personal protective measures, and nursing care. Results: Most of the nurses caring for patients with Covid-19 were well-informed about institutional, personal, and patient protective precautions. The scores of female nurses, married nurses and those with children were higher. Multiple regression analysis revealed that in-service training, working in a clinic, and having colleagues diagnosed with Covid-19 positively affected knowledge, while having 0–5 years of professional experience negatively affected knowledge. Conclusion: This study may enlighten medical authorities and policymakers in their efforts to promote the quality of care delivered to patients with Covid-19 and the quality of working conditions of healthcare providers. © 2022 Central European Journal of Nursing and Midwifery.

ABSTRACT

This study aims at identifying secondary school students' life experiences during the coronavirus (covid-19) pandemic time. With the concept of life experiences used throughout the research; Students' views on their daily routines during the pandemic, changes in their lives, the precautions they take against the epidemic and their continuing education practices are expressed. Phenomenology, which is an approach to qualitative research, was adopted in this study. The study data were gathered through semi-structured interviews and analysed via content analysis. This study was carried out with a study group composed of students who were attending a state school in Turkey and who were included in the scope of lockdown. The study group was determined by criterion sampling, which is one of the purposeful sampling methods. The study group consisted of 20 students, 14 girls and 6 boys. Students' age ranged from 14 to 16 years old. Students are in the 7th and 8th grades of secondary school. According to the content analysis carried out within the framework of this study, secondary school students interpret covid-19 as unhealthiness and unusualness, they spend time at home indulging in academic pastime, daily routine and free time activities. They take necessary precautionary measures regarding hygiene, interpersonal contact and nourishment in order to protect themselves from covid-19 virus. As a result of the covid-19 pandemic, students' daily routines and perceptions have changed, and they have experienced positive and negative emotions in the face of these changes. They tend to receive social support, participate in leisure activities and use personal coping strategies to manage negative emotions and thoughts caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The participant students have positive and negative thoughts about the distance education conducted during the pandemic time, and they have some suggestions as to education and protection from the virus in order to spend the pandemic days more healthily.

ABSTRACT

This editorial to the Special Section on COVID-19 emphasises the importance of researching pandemic realities and the value that the findings can bring to the way we shape decisions in the future, for the 'new normal'. The pandemic, with its rapidly changing timeline, required swift action in untrialled circumstances and its consequences have been experienced differently by diverse institutions and across national contexts. Depending on the roles and responsibilities we may have taken on during this time, our capabilities to document our experiences and emerging trends have varied. © University of Deusto.

ABSTRACT

This work presents a narrative of the author's experiences as a psychiatrist and public health researcher of his Covid-19 illness, as expressed in memory, through recall, stream of consciousness, recording of factual elements and critical reflection. The time in intensive care was forgotten and came to be remembered according to the logic of hallucinatory-delusional fabulation. The temporal and clinical facts are based on the intensive care unit, ward and homecare team's medical records in the author's possession. The author seeks to offer a singular experience of how Covid-19 makes us think about the individual, the collective and health policy in connection with the first great viral pandemic in the globalized world, which has not yet reached its end.
